The Blogger Recognition Award

BloggerRecognitionAward

Thank you so much to Siriusly Good Book Reviews for nominating me for the Blogger Recognition Award!

Rules:

  1. Select 15 other blogs to give the award to. You can’t nominate yourself or the person who nominated you.
  2. Write a post to show off your blog. Talk about how your blog started and give a piece of advice to new bloggers.
  3. Comment on each blog and let them know you nominated them. Be sure to provide a link to your post.
  4. Provide a link to the original post on Edge of Night, so people can find the original rules if they need them. This will keep the award rules from straying from the original too much.

How this blog got started:

Well. My blogging journey is kind of a long story.

It all started in… sixth grade, I think? Sixth or seventh grade. So, about three or four years ago. Probably closer to four.

BelleShrug

Anyway. In sixth grade (I’m just going to say sixth grade because that’s more impressive), I was obsessed with wolves. And when I say obsessed, I mean OBSESSED. I drew wolves, I wrote about wolves, I wore clothes with wolves on them, everything was wolves.

LokiMadness

So, anyway. I wanted a place where I could talk wolves and share my thoughts, and my mom, a graphic designer (you can check out her super awesome website here!), had an idea – I could set up a blog! So that’s what I did.

I started with Blogspot (mostly because it’s simpler) and ran a blog… I think the title was Wolves for Kids? Something like that. It was a lot of fun – I talked about wolf related news, reviewed wolf related books and movies, you get the idea.

PeteShrug

After a while, though, I started to get bored with wolves.

So I set up a writing themed blog, Noveling at Twelve (named because I was a twelve year old, not because I stayed up until twelve to write – my attention span was too short for that). It was mostly just little anecdotes and tips on writing, never anything more than a paragraph. It was fun, though. The posts were quick and, even looking back now, they were informative, even if not very detailed (at all).

I did have a big ego. But, I mean, it’s not like that’s unusual for me.

BigEgo

So I did that for a while, but then I got tired of themed blogs in general.

(Just FYI, Wolves For Kids was deleted, so I can’t link to it. Sorry about that!)

For a while, I dropped blogging altogether. But I had liked it so much, and I came to the realization that I didn’t want to quit. My next move was setting up a new blog, Nerds Inc, that I decided not to give a theme.

At first, I mostly used it as a Pinterest board kind of thing – it was usually just posts with “funny” pictures that I liked, almost always Doctor Who related.

MyFandomNeedsMe

Eventually, I realized that that wasn’t really what I was looking for either – I wanted a place to share my writing, and my thoughts! So I made another shift in theme, deleted all the old “funny picture” posts, and started writing more original content.

Finally, more recently, I realized how unhappy I was with Nerds Inc. The title, the url, and the options for customization on Blogger (which are pretty crappy) just weren’t what I was looking for.

WhatImLookingFor

So I FINALLY got to where I am now: Stay and Watch the Stars! It’s taken a lot of work, and it still isn’t even CLOSE to perfect, but for the moment, I’m happy with this.

Advice to New Bloggers

I actually have a few pieces of advice, because I’m cool that way.

I'mAwesome

First off: you’re not going to be perfect right away, so don’t expect yourself to be. Being a good blogger takes time and, even more importantly, work. It’s something that comes with practice, just like any other skill. And what works now will, if you’re anything like me, not work forever. So don’t feel bad if you need to, say, switch up the theme a lot, or take an extended break from blogging. You’ll figure things out.

YOU ARE PERFECT AND YOUR BLOG IS BEAUTIFUL SO KEEP BEING YOU

YOU ARE PERFECT AND YOUR BLOG IS BEAUTIFUL SO KEEP BEING YOU

Second: interact with other bloggers! Unless you started blogging so you could scream into a void (which is totally fine), you probably want people to see what you’re writing. Whether that means follows, likes, or comments to you (each blogger sees this differently, I find), it’s not going to happen unless you put a little work into it. Interacting with bloggers is the best way to get attention. Follow blogs, like their posts, but most importantly, comment! Talk to people, start discussions, and they’re far more likely to return the favor.

SO DON'T ACT LIKE IT

SO DON’T ACT LIKE IT

Third, and finally: be open minded and nice to other bloggers, and people in general! Let’s say someone is raving about a book that you absolutely HATED. It’s fine to leave a friendly comment explaining why you didn’t like the book, but do it in a nice way! Don’t go to their post and be all like THIS BOOK SUCKZ AND ALL COPIES OF IT SHOULD BE BURNED AND HERE’S WHY, because that’s going to feel like bullying to the writer, even if that’s not how you intended it. Also, be open to new ideas! For example, if someone leaves a comment on one of your posts gently pointing out that a book you liked is SUPER racist, at least try to listen to their ideas. You don’t have to agree. I’m not saying you should listen to everything everyone tells you, because that’s absurd and impossible. But just keep your eyes and ears open to new ideas. People are always different, and by trying to see the world through someone else’s eyes, you may see something new and amazing (or horrible) that you never would’ve noticed otherwise.

so basically, don't act like this

so basically, don’t act like this

I’m not going to be nominating anyone for this – I’m sorry about that, but honestly I’m feeling really lazy right now and can’t think of fifteen blogs I want to nominate.

The Versatile Blogger Award

VersatileBloggerAward

Thank you to Elly (I finally spelled your name right!) at A Hufflepuff’s Thoughts for nominating me for the Versatile Blogger award! I know that I just posted about an award, but honestly, these posts are really quick and easy to write, and I’m pretty busy right now. Sorry… I hope you don’t mind.

LokiSorry

But anyway. Let’s get started, and hopefully I’ll have some more original posts up soon!

Rules:

  • Thank the person awarding you.
  • Paste the Blog Award on your page.
  • Share 10 random facts about yourself.
  • Nominate 15 others.

Ten random facts:

  1. I’m going to be in a school play in May. We’re doing a bunch of scenes from different Shakespeare plays, and I’m playing Celia in As You Like It and Alice in Henry V. My parts are kind of small, but that’s actually pretty nice because I’m busy enough as is.
  2. My class is also taking a field trip to the Shakespeare Festival in Oregon!
  3. I’m kinda trying to get at least a vague idea of what I’d like to do with my life, and my ideas all have a pretty wide scope. I’d love to be an author, although I’m not really sure whether I would want that to be my full time job or not. Editing is kind of fun, but again, I don’t know if I enjoy it enough to make a living out of it. And lately, I’ve started to kind of daydream about being in a band- I’d really love to inspire people in the same way that the bands I love inspire me. But again, I’m not sure how likely that is.Sing
  4. I’m working my way through Parks and Recreation (very slowly) right now and really enjoying it!Knope
  5. I love traveling, and I’d really like to do it more often! I went to Ireland a little less than two years ago, and I’ve been to Hawaii a few times.
  6. A couple of days ago, I painted my nails for the first time in years. They’re red, and they’re chipping by now, but they look really pretty. I actually kind of like how they look better when they’re chipped.
  7. My thumb is double jointed, which basically means that I can bend it really weirdly.
  8. When I was in fourth grade and had braces, the orthodontist would give me these little plastic boxes of wax that I could use to keep the wires from scratching. I would empty the boxes and then turn them into little tiny terrariums and keep pillbugs in them and then put them in my desk.
  9. My socks almost never match. Sometimes I’ll even pair a knee sock with an ankle sock. It seems kind of lazy but the truth is that I’m just extremely fashion forward.
  10. I’ve recently started watching Dan and Phil after a ton of recommendations from friends. I’ve only seen a couple of their videos so far but they’re really funny and I’m really enjoying them.DanAndPhil

The Creative Blogger Award

CreativeBloggerAward

Thank you so much to The Wolf of Starbucks for nominating me for the Creative Blogger award!

The Rules:

  • Nominate 15-20 blogs and notify all nominees via their social media/blogs
  • Thank and post the link of the blog that nominated you (very important)
  • Share 5 facts about yourself to your readers
  • Pass these rules on to them

Five random facts about me:

  • Well, right off the bat, I’m going to say that I find it kind of silly that pretty much every award asks for random facts. They’re really hard to come up with (at least for me…)
  • I just finished I’ll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson. It was a really good book, and I especially appreciated the fact that it didn’t neglect family relationships in lieu of romance, a bit of a pet peeve of mine in YA.
  • I’m still reading comic books, believe it or not, although this blog has taken a bit more of a turn towards books and music instead of books and comics.
  • I’d give anything to see twenty one pilots live. My Chemical Romance would also be amazing but I mean that’s not going to happen so
  • My hair is black (in the back) and purple (in the front) with blonde highlights (where the dye is washing out) right now and it looks kind of crazy but also pretty cool. I’d like to do pastel colors sometime, or maybe blue or bright orange.

Nominees: The Book Hugger, Science, Books, and Silly Things, Clockwork Desires, Galloping Free, Books, Tea, and a Onesie, Horse Feathers, Diary of a Teen Writer, Where Books Never End, A Hufflepuff’s Thoughts, A Twist in the Taile, Ravings of a Dead Poet

A brief history of my blogging experience and Stay and Watch the Stars:

I think I first started blogging around fifth or sixth grade. I’d mulled over the idea of starting a website or blog at this point, and my mom said that she would help me as long as I came up with a theme for the blog on my own. So, after a bit of thinking, I decided that I would blog about one of my biggest obsessions at the time- wolves! Thus began wolvesforkids.blogspot.com (Or maybe it was wolves4kids? I don’t really remember.) I would post basically anything that had to do with wolves. Mostly conservation news and such, along with a handful of (really terrible) wolf book and movie reports. I also compiled a bunch of websites and pictures and such. Even if the writing wasn’t all that great, it was pretty impressive for a sixth grader, if I do say so myself.

Smug

A little while later, I started trying out a couple of different blogs, but I never really got as into them as I was with Wolves For Kids. Even so, I dropped the project a little while later and kind of forgot about blogging for a while.

Unfortunately, Wolves for Kids was deleted when my mom deactivated her Blogger account (I’d been doing it through hers).

Later on, (still in sixth grade, though) I started a blog called Noveling at Twelve (through my own Blogger account). It was basically just a bunch of writing advice that I compiled in short little posts. It was all really simplistic, but it was nice and to the point, which I am rather proud of. And it was mostly good, solid advice!

But after a while, I decided that Noveling at Twelve still wasn’t really what I was looking for. So, while still maintaining Noveling at Twelve, I started Nerds Inc (creative title, huh?), an unthemed blog where I could post basically whatever. Unfortunately, Nerds Inc went on a bit of a downward slope as I posted nothing but random pictures that I found funny (the stuff that I usually now use Pinterest to keep track of). So, for about a year, Nerds Inc was really nothing but a meme blog.

I later decided that I wanted to turn in the direction of a book blog instead, so I deleted all my posts and started over with (sloppily written) more original, longer posts.

But even that wasn’t quite right! I didn’t get it. I’d tried a billion different things and none of them really worked out.

Confused

About six months ago, I decided that Blogspot wasn’t really giving me what I wanted in terms of the ability to communicate with my followers because, let’s face it, it’s a really crappy platform when it comes to communication. It’s nice and simple, and the ability to go in and edit the css/ html without paying is nice, but it’s still frustratingly difficult to actually see who’s following you and stuff.

So that’s when I started Stay and Watch the Stars! It’s been a long journey of trial and error, but (at least for now) I’m quite happy with where I’m at.

  4. Nominate 11 bloggers to receive this award.
  5. Come up with 11 questions for your nominees!

Random facts about me:

  1. My current favorite bands are My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, All Time Low, and Panic! at the Disco.
  2. I’m currently reading The Miseducation of Cameron Post by Emily Danforth and loving it.
  3. I’m also working my way through the Marvel: Civil War comics (Spider-Man, at the moment).
  4. Right now I’m listening to Paint You Wings by All Time Low.
  5. I have a pet bearded dragon named Sydney. Sydney
  6. My favorite color is purple, especially darker shades, but I also like blues (any shade but royal blue). Cool colors in general are pretty cool (see what I did there?).
  7. If Agent Carter isn’t renewed for a second season I will cry. And cry. And cry. For several days.
  8. I really stink at writing these random fact things.
  9. Like, why is it so hard to come up with random facts? They’re random. It should be easy. Oh well.
  10. I’m really, really busy with school right now. So I guess this also serves as an excuse for the lack of posts lately.
  11. I’m seriously out of ideas so here, have a picture of My Chemical Romance being majestic drama queens.MajesticMCR

Elly’s Questions (and my answers):

  1. What is your favourite film? Captain America: The Winter Soldier
  2. What is the reason behind your blog’s name? It sounded pretty. And I like stars. That’s about it, honestly.
  3. Who is your favourite character from anything ever? There are far, far too many to count. I guess I’d go with Quentin Quire from the X-Men comics, though? He’s a super complex and conflicted character, but he’s also a sassy punk. KidOmegaFamous He has the most fantastic t-shirts, too. QuentinQuireTShirts
  4. If you could immediately become fluent in one language, what language would you pick and why? Either Irish or Latin. Irish because I have lots of Irish ancestors and I’m really interested in my heritage. Latin because… I dunno. It’s Latin. It would be cool.  And I feel like it would really come in handy for writing.
  5. What is your favourite food? Potatoes. Preferably in the form of hash browns, but I’m really not picky. potato
  6. What are some of your favourite blogs? (With links) Sorry, but I’m not going to answer this one. Knowing me, I’d probably forget someone, and I don’t want to do that!
  7. Who’s your favourite actor/ actress? Absolutely no idea. I don’t really have one.
  8. What is your favourite item of clothing? My Doc Martens, no question!!! They’re the normal black ones, and ohmygosh I’m in love with them. I’ve just started to break them in (I got them for Christmas), but they’re getting more and more comfortable, and I mean wow. I can’t really put it into words but I love them so much okay. DocMartens
  9. What is your favourite book/ comic series? That’s a reeeeaaaally hard choice. Maybe Seraphina by Rachel Hartman for favorite book? And for favorite comic series… Wolverine and the X-Men, I think. Or Ms Marvel– the ones about Kamala Khan, not Carol Danvers (although they’re both awesome). KamalaKhanFanfiction
  10. What is your favourite number? 42
  11. If you could rule the world, what would you do first? Free pizza for everyone on Fridays. Oh, and I’d improve the school system because that’s something that’s sorely needed.

My questions:

  1. What’s your favorite quote?
  2. Who are some people you look up to? (Family members, celebrities, fictional characters, whatever)
  3. What’s your favorite band/ musician? And your favorite song by them?
  4. What’s your favorite fictional character? (Name multiples if you want. I won’t judge.)
  5. What’s your OTP? (Same as above.)
  6. Press shuffle on your iPod or whatever you listen to music on. What’s the title of the song that comes up first?
  7. Name a fictional character that you really relate to.
  8. What was the last essay that you wrote for school about?
  9. What’s your favorite gif?
  10. What’re some of your hobbies/ things you feel really passionate about?
  11. Who’s your favorite author?

Sisterhood of the World Bloggers Award

I initially intended to review Eleanor and Park yesterday, but it didn’t work out (meaning I got sick and decided to marathon Agents of SHIELD instead). Hopefully, though, the review will be up soon (spoiler alert: I LOVED it).

But anyway. Thanks you SO MUCH to Galloping Free for nominating me for the Sisterhood of the World Bloggers Award! It means a lot to me.

SisterhoodBloggersAward

The rules:

  1. Thank the blogger who nominated you, linking back to their site.
  2. Put the Award logo on your blog.
  3. Answer the ten questions sent to you.
  4. Make up ten new questions for your nominees to answer.
  5. Nominate seven blogs.

The questions

What’s your favorite color and why?

I like dark colors. Navy blue, dark purples and greys, you get the picture. I’m not entirely sure why, though. They just… look pretty?

What’s your favorite quote of all time?

That’s… a hard question. But I’ve always liked this one…

LovedTheStars

Fun fact: It wasn’t actually Galileo who said that, but it’s pretty commonly miscredited to him. The quote is actually from a poem about Galileo called The Old Astronomer to His Pupil by Sarah Williams.

(I like stars, in case you haven’t picked up on that already)

What’s your favorite food to eat when you’re feeling upset?

Chocolate. It keeps the dementors away.

Chocolate2

What’s the song that inspires you most?

Oh gosh that’s a seriously hard question. Maybe Centuries by Fall Out Boy, though? (Yes, I talk about this song a lot. No, I don’t care.)

Centuries

Or the Bob the Builder theme song. I find it pretty inspiring. WE CAN BUILD IT!

If you could learn any language in the world (regardless of time and effort) which language would you learn?

Latin, probably. I’d really love to learn Latin. It would also be cool to learn Irish, though, since I have a lot of Irish ancestry.

Favorite film?

THAT’S A REALLY HARD QUESTION. But… probably Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

If you could write any book in the world (regardless of how well you knew the subject matter) then what book would you write?

No idea.

What genre do you enjoy reading/ writing in the most?

I like writing contemporary with a science fiction or fantasy twist (mostly because it’s fun and it’s what I’m good at). Same goes for reading, I think. I also like to read historical fiction as well.

Have you ever had peach molasses?

Nope.

My questions

  1. What’s the saddest book you’ve ever read?
  2. What’s your favorite animal, and why?
  3. Would you rather write a best selling book that everyone loves but you, or write a book that only you love?
  4. What’s your opinion on potatoes? (Yes, this is a very important question. It’s for research purposes.)
  5. What’s the longest amount of time you’ve spent marathoning a movie/ TV series?
  6. Why did you decide to start blogging?
  7. If you could choose one superpower, what would it be?
  8. What’s your favorite word? (The way it sounds, the meaning, whatever. Just your favorite word, for any reason.)
  9. If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go? (Disregarding costs and such)
  10. What’s the last song you listened to?
